Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Lady Gaga:Ruining The Female Singer Songwriter.

The female songwriter has always had a rough time getting their voices heard in this industry, and while I feel these new pop stars have talent I wanted to talk about why they (and the industry) have ruined the music industry with sexist bullshit that the feminist movement fought so hard against.
It used to be about the music, but now it's about filling pocketbooks. Why did these ladies conform to the suits instead of change the world, and what does this mean for the younger generation of music lovers.

Katy Perry:

I remember when Katy Perry came out in 2008 with her breakout hit "I Kissed A Girl" I automatically wrote her off as just another cheesy pop tart who was looking to cash in on the sex sells route. So I was shocked to ind out my older sister actually liked her a lot and re-assured me that she can actually write good songs and that she is more then what her pop songs portray. So after years of going "yeah right, uh huh suuure." I was stunned to see a video on you tube of Katy Perry singing an acoustic version of what I guess was one of the first songs she ever wrote that went on to be used on her album One of the Boys:

Thinking Of You

For the first time I was blown away; by not only the beautiful lyrics but also her sincere honesty she had when she sang it.It got me thinking; was I wrong this whole time?
Is there more to this Katy Perry chick?
Is she a real singer songwriter underneath that whip cream bra? Actually....Yes but my bigger question to Miss Katy Perry would be this:
You have this gift of writing songs, you can sing, your beautiful, and you used to write christian music...why did you sell out? What happened? Did you sell out in order to get your voice heard by the industry so you could go on to write better more meaningful songs one day, or after five plus years of struggling you said "Fuck it" and just caved in to the bullshit world of pop music.I would love to know the real answer to this, since it just saddens me to know that the girl who can write songs like this:

Trust in Me (off her christian album titled Katy Hudson)

To writing bullshit like this:

California Gurls

What the fuck happened?
___________________________________________________________________________

Ke$ha:

Ke$ha is another pop artist I would like to talk about and one who truly confuses the hell out of me.Is she a corporate hack or is she just a parodist in the sense that she is making fun of the ridiculousness of the industry and pop music in general and using that to cash in?
I would like to believe the answer is the the last one and here's why; When I first heard the utter ridiculousness that is "Tik Tok" The first thought I had was "She has to be joking, Nobody could really be this fucked up!" and upon doing some research of her background here are some interesting facts:

1.Like Katy Perry she writes or co-writes all of her own songs and has actually written songs for other famous pop artists (like Katy Perry Has).
2.Ke$ha learned songwriting from her mother who was a successful country songwriter who wrote such hits as "Old Flames Can't Hold a Candle To You."
3.Dr. Luke (who went on to sign her) described her demo like this:"A gorgeously sung, self-penned country ballad" and the second "a gobsmackingly awful trip-hop track, when you're listening to 100 CDs, that kind of bravado and chutzpah stand out."

I know making it as a singer songwriter is hard in this industry, but how can someone who wrote this:

GoodBye

To write this cluster fuck:

We R Who We R

What the fuck happened?
________________________________________________________________________

Lady Gaga:

I probably don't need to go into detail about this last artist, but unless you live in a cave Lady Gaga is a pop singer who got her start performing in small club venues in new york as part of the defunct band "The Stefani Germonatta Band" aptly named after her real name Stefani. Now anybody who knows me knows that unlike the other two ladies above in this post, I personally cannot stand Lady Gaga and her shitty music. But before all the little monsters get their panties in a bunch let me explain
I like Stefani G's songs, the ones she wrote when she was still "struggling"
but not the trite bullshit that she now sells as Lady Gaga.

I can deal with this:

 But not this shit:

Judas

What the fuck Happened?
_________________________________________________

My big point is this:

Obviously all these women are talented in their own right, so how come the industry have made them into these corporate idiot pop stars?
And why does Katy Perry, Kesha and Lady Gaga let them get away with this?
More importantly: Why do WE as the consumer buy this bullshit?
Why don't we expect more from the industry at this point, they have talented artists so why are they making them write trivial pop shit?
Instead of shaking their titties why don't they wake the fuck up and realize from the success of Adele that normal people want normal deep music,I  know it's a shocker!
The road was already paved by brilliant songwriters like Joni Mitchell,Carly Simon and Carole King, now why don't they pick up where these women left off? Pop music originally was supposed to be the pulse of what the common people were listening to that was popular. So technically, pop music could be about anything, It didn't have to be stupid dance club tracks, it could be about love, redemption, war and sadness, which are all common experiences in the human collective.

Carole King's 1971 album Tapestry is considered one of the most successful pop albums by a female artist with over 25 million sold worldwide, 4 Grammy's (including album of the year.) and is ranked #36 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. She is also inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame for songwriting with credits spanning back to the 1960's.
This is what pop songs can be without having to conform to industry standards:

I feel the earth move

It's too late

Joni Mitchell is another wonderful songwriter who not only has written many hits for other people but has written some of the most iconic songs or herself as well, with her album Blue being considered one of the most prolific albums ever.

Big Yellow Taxi has been covered by many different artists, but I think it keeps a fine balance of fun but with a message. Even if it is not your cup of tea, you can't deny that she is talking about real issues like the environment (1st song) and love (2nd song) are issues that still resonate to this day:

Big Yellow Taxi

Both sides now

Katy,Kesha, and Gaga:
There is no reason why you can't write good music that means something without having to sell your souls and without having to lose your identities. It is our mission as women to tell the sexist industry that we don't have to flash our tits to get noticed, we are all valid and deserve a real voice, we deserve more then double meanings and getting drunk, we are powerful, smart, funny, deep individuals who need to strive for more then just the next dubstep nightmare of a song. I don't want my daughter growing up thinking that boys, shopping, sex, drugs and drinking till they puke are the only things that matter in this world.
Popular music doesn't have to be shallow and repetitive, it can be deep and thought provoking as well, real music doesn't have guidelines, it can be whatever we want it to be.
And for me, I deserve something better, society deserves better and our future generations deserve better.
I cannot wait for the day you ladies stop with the bullshit songs and write an album that actually means something and changes the world  for the better instead of make it worse.

Until then, I'll be listening to Joni, Carole and Carly.

Top 5 Worst Super Bowl Halftime Shows Ever!

I Swear It'll Be Live!

On Sunday, February 3rd America's favorite excuse to pig out
(The Super Bowl) will broadcast live on CBS.
Personally I could care less about sports and all the lame ass teams, but to humor my husband I watch with "interest", counting down the minutes until the Superbowl Halftime show occurs. This years show in my opinion is a huge step down with Beyonce leading the pact, and a not so secret of a possible Destiny Child's reunion!....I know I'm not excited either.
Don't get me wrong, I love my girl groups, I was a huge fan of En Vogue back in the day and I love the Supremes, But I just could not get behind the lame songs of DC, believe it or not Bootylicious just didn't do it for me.

With that said, In honor of the greatest show on earth, here's my personal list of the Top 5 Worst Super Bowl Halftime Shows Ever!

5.The Black Eyed Peas and Usher
(2011)

Black Eyed Peas is good at one thing...what that is yet I haven't figured out, but until then enjoy their Super bowl halftime show where they shout into the mic, barely dance and Fergie sings a painfully drunk (maybe?) / off key rendition of a Guns and Roses classic "Sweet Child of Mine". I have no idea why they broke up, they are so.....good....

4.New Kids on the Block ,Warren Moon and It's a Small World
(1991)

If I were to die tomorrow and go to hell, I'm pretty sure this is where I would end up.
Complete with Sexually friendly New Kids on the Block,Characters dressed as football players, a butt load of cheesy lip syncing and 2000 children on the field make this not only Micheal Jackson's wet dream, but one of the most brilliant cringe worthy Super bowls ever.

3.Gloria Estefan & Olympic skaters Brian Boitano and Dorothy Hamill
(1992)

You think that with the crap-tastic awesomeness of the 1991 performances they could have picked something better, but oh no folks you were wrong! They went bigger, cheesier and even lamer! Kids rapping, thousands of baton dancing, a marching band, hockey team, Estefan's cheesy songs and of course Boitano, I don't know how this could go wrong!
Pt.1 Video

Pt.2.Video (Gloria Estefan)

2.Patti Labelle, Indiana Jones, Tony Bennett and The Miami Sound Machine (1995)

Disney created this whole halftime show to promote the new Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland...because theatrics, Tony Bennett and football mix! Patti Labelle is great but Tony Bennett singing a ballad surrounded by people in tribal gear just doesn't quite mesh well, and throwing in the damn sound machine doesn't help either.
Enjoy this 11 minute big ass commercial!

1.Up With People
(1976) (1980) (1982) (1986)

Up with People is a educational organization that tries to build a bridge of cultural understanding through volunteer work and musical shows...who doesn't love getting educated during football?! I know I do! While I can respect their mission, I cannot overlook the watered down pop song covers or even their original pieces of crap, cheesy "drink the kool-aid" smiles and robotic dancing. I am honestly shocked they were a staple for FOUR Super Bowls! It truly boggles my mind that they thought this was a good idea...for FOUR Super Bowls! I was originally going to post only one video of their shows, but since all four years are pretty equal in their lameness, I'm going to post all four!
(It's okay, You can send me hate mail later!)
Enjoy the worst Super Bowl Performances Ever!!! xoxoxox
www.upwithpeople.org

1976 Performance

1980 Performance

1982 Performance

1986 Performance

Honorable Mention:
Goes to my favorite car crash of all time, the halftime show at the Orange Bowl with Ashlee Simpson! Awkward dancing, screaming into the mic, and trying to look like an actual singer just makes this worthy of an honorable mention!

Maybe she should have lip synced this...just a thought...

What do you think of the list? Agree or Disagree?

Writer's Block....

I have wanted to post something fun and silly for a couple of weeks now, but I have no inspiration...at all.Nothing really excites me, or pisses me off, so I don't feel passionate enough to write about a topic.Anybody else get to that point in there life? When everything is just blah? Not good or bad but just meh? That's how I feel right now, so if anybody was wondering, that is why I haven't written anything good in awhile....

On a random Note, here's an amazing music video I am into right now from 2011 By one of my favorite artists of all time Bjork....Enjoy!

The Top 10 Best Albums of 2012!

Happy Almost New Year!
In honor of the world not caving in itself (not yet at least) I thought it would be fun to do a year in review of the albums that truly shifted the music scene, and moved my soul as well.

Here's my personal list of the top 10 best albums of 2012!

10.Jack White -Blunderbuss
http://jackwhiteiii.com/news/
This record for me is Jack White at his best. Between his insightful lyrics, gritty sound that we have all come to know and love in his body of work, and the fact that he musically never rest on his laurels, He is always pushing the boundaries of what he can do and this album is no exception. If you were not a fan before I feel this record will change your mind as it did with mine.

9.Cat Power -Sun
http://www.catpowermusic.com/
It's funny, I always forget about Cat Power but every single album she puts out is absolutely brilliant and more groundbreaking then before and makes me fall in love with her all over again. She is one of the few indie artists in my opinion that has never had one bad album...at all...Which is a huge feat in itself and this album stays true to that sentiment. Honest and insightful lyrics, mixed with unforgettable melodies is what separates her from the rest. New Indie artists take note: She is the standard for what you should all strive to be.

8.Fiona Apple-The Idler Wheel
http://www.fiona-apple.com/
I remember when she came out I wasn't sure about her. I couldn't decide if the whole crazy introvert
thing was an act or for real. Well between calling out the industry for it's "bullshit" to always writing music to the beat of her own drum, she has truly proved just what a one of a kind songwriter she is. While I feel this album is not nearly as groundbreaking as When the Pawn, my list would just not feel complete without it. Just Fiona, her voice and her band are all this album entails,Which is a welcome change from all the overly produced albums of her contemporaries.

7.Bruce Springsteen -Wrecking Ball
http://brucespringsteen.net/
I will be honest, usually I could care less about The boss and his rather nice ass, but this album for me was a pleasant surprise. I can finally see why people love him so much, he is truly the every man. He is just salt of the earth Americana and that obviously resonates with millions of people. If you were not a fan before I feel this is a good introduction to his music. While is it very classic Springsteen it still feels just commercial enough to keep your ear interested. This album is a good testament of his songwriting skills and his wonderful musicianship. You will not be disappointed.

6. Norah Jones -Little Broken Hearts
http://www2.norahjones.com/
I have always loved Norah and I am so happy to say that she is back and better then ever. An odd but brilliant collaboration with Danger Mouse makes this one of the most poignant albums of the year and one of the most haunting. This style suits her perfectly and I am honestly surprised this album hasn't shown up more on "The Best of" Lists of more music critics, since this is a stunning piece of work and a must own for any music lover.

5.The Killers -Battle Born
http://www.thekillersmusic.com/
The Killers always put out good solid music, and while this is not as great as their last couple of albums it is still a welcome addition to their discography.Sweeping melodies, haunting vocals and that classic Killers sound we have all come to love about them. I'll be honest and say when I first started listening to them back in the day (Vegas native here baby!lol) I never thought they would get as big as they have, but I guess that is the nature of the beast and I just hope some of my other favorite local Vegas bands makes it just as big one day (C'mon Slow to Surface, I'm looking at you!).

4.Ben Folds Five -The Sound of the Life of the Mind
http://www.benfolds.com/
Love Ben Folds, he truly never ceases to amaze me. His is one of the most underrated musical geniuses of our generation and I am glad he is back with this tour de force of an album. Every song on this album is a standout and that is just testament to his wonderful songwriting. My personal favorite however is of course "Do It Anyway" (Sorry I have a thing for Fraggles, lol) But this song is just one of many gems on this amazing album. The kinetic energy, beautiful melodies and some genuinely heartbreaking moments like on the song "Thank you for breaking my heart" make this a staple for any music lover's collection.

3.Mumford and Sons -Babel
http://www.mumfordandsons.com/
Another band that I am starting to play catch up on and this is definitely a very solid follow up to their 2009 album Sigh No More. They have a wonderful ability to still sound fresh while giving a musical nod to the past and this album follows in that trend. I know when I listen to an album I always try to find that one filler song and shockingly (for me at least) that song does not exist. Every song is big, passionate and beautiful. Whether you are a fan of indie, bluegrass or alt country or new rock there is something for everybody on here. I know this will be on constant rotation in my house for awhile. Just good classic songs from one of the most promising indie bands from the past 10 years.

2.Bob Dylan-Tempest
http://www.bobdylan.com/us/home
I know I might get some shit for putting Him at #2 But trust me, writing this list was so hard since this year was jam packed with wonderful music from my favorite artists. Every album on this list is amazing, so take my reviews with a grain of salt. This is classic Bob Dylan at his best, even if he seems to be channeling Tom Waits from time to time on this record. Insightful lyrics, and excellent musicianship just show why Bob Dylan has been at the top of his game for so long.

1.Over The Rhine-The Long Surrender
http://overtherhine.com/
I am very aware that this album technically came out last year, but for me they are one of the best bands of the past 20 years and are long over due for their recognition. (plus this is my list so I can do whatever the fuck I want, so suck it! hahaha.) Between their sweeping melodies, Linford's beautiful lyrics, Karin's haunting voice, and religious / social undertones this album has a little bit for everybody, which is what separates them for me from other indie folk artists. They have been doing consistently good music for 20 plus years and if you are not already a fan I implore you to go out and buy this album. For me, they are the antithesis of  breathtakingly brilliant storytelling.

So there you have it, My list of the top 10 albums of 2012 (and 2011) !
What are your thoughts? Agree or disagree with my list? Who would be your top 10?
Comment and Let's discuss!

Top 10 Best Christmas Movies / Specials Ever!

Happy Holidays!

Since Christmas is one of my absolute favorite times of the year for watching classic holiday movies I decided  to compile a list of not only the greatest but some of my favorite Christmas movies to maybe inspire you guys tomorrow to enjoy with your loved ones.I hope this list brings you as much joy and memories as it does for me!

Top 10 Best Christmas Movies / Specials Ever!

10. A Christmas Story
A family movie that I feel everyone could relate too. Between a wonderful script, and amazing actors you simply cannot go wrong with this classic holiday film.

9.It Happened on 5th Avenue.
Sure the script might be a little far fetched (a homeless man squatting in a rich mans home and the hilarious hi jinks that ensue) It is still worth watching just for the sincere performances and wonderful character actors that pepper this wonderful film. I feel it is a wonderfully optimistic film that will delight your love of classic christmas movies, and will make a wonderful addition to your collection.

8.Prancer.
I grew up watching this and I am proud to say the story still holds up to this day. The story of a   daughter and Father who are poor and the struggles that entails, come across what the daughter believes to be a fallen reindeer (I know, but bear with me.) Between the sappy plot and depressing moments, it actually is a good commentary on real families in real situation and the importance of coming together to survive through the tough times.

7.Holiday Inn.

A classic movie that always gets over looked by the huge christmas staple that has become " White Christmas" But I feel might be a little bit better in a way. The plot is surrounded a singer who wants a change of pace, and buys an inn to create shows and also live a peaceful life from the hustle and bustle of the entertainment world. The gimmick being that he creates brand new musical reviews for pretty much every major holiday you can think of (including Abraham Lincoln! The awkward showstopper.)
Fun, romantic, and an instant classic for lovers of anything that Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby do!

6.How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
What can I say that has not already been said about this classic? Seriously, it's the Grinch You would have to live under a rock or be the Grinch himself to not appreciate this masterpiece.

  5.Christmas Vacation.
It does not matter how many years I have been watching this film, it is still in my opinion one of the funniest christmas movies ever! Comedic flawless timing, wonderful cast and Chevy at his best, this is an absolute must for the holiday season!

4.Scrooged.
Hands down this is my favorite Bill Murray movie! Oddly enough, I heard that Bill hates this movie, which is completely maddening to me since there is nothing bad about it. Great cast, wonderful script and some wonderful genuine moments from Bill Murray makes this a huge staple in my families movie rotation.

                                                               3.The Snowman.
This to me is one of the most brilliant pieces of animation to ever grace my television set. It's beautiful score, and breathtaking animation makes me extremely envious that I was not apart of this gem somehow. If you have never seen it, please click now! I promise it will give you chills and move you to tears. Simply a family must!

2.White Christmas.
Ah good old Bing Crosby and Danny Fucking Kaye! This classic holiday movie is an absolute must and I can guarantee will leave you with a song in your heart and your toes a tappin!

1.It's a Wonderful Life.
It's a wonderful life....just go watch it....right now....seriously right now.......a brilliant classic which makes you think, and warms your heart. I feel many of us can relate to his struggles, which makes it the most enduring movie of all time.
